A Brief History of the Great Park Carousel
Originally built for Fashion Island, Newport Beach by Barrango Manufacturing, the carousel ride entertained guests for six years at Fashion Island, until it was removed during a remodel of the shopping center. The rides’ removal sparked community interest and a petition drive that drew more than 650 signatures from residents who did not want to see the carousel retired. But when a buyer for the carousel could not be found, the owner of Fashion Island returned it to Barrango.
Realizing the nostalgic influence and the important memories the carousel created for many residents of Orange County, the Orange County Great Park Corporation purchased it from Barrango in 2010. Since then, it has become a hugely popular attraction near the Great Park Balloon -- with over 15,000 Park visitors riding monthly -- its magical charm attracting riders of all ages.
About the Foundation
Since its formation in October of 2000, the role of the Foundation has been to generate and maintain public and private support throughout Orange County and beyond for the development and operation of the Orange County Great Park. A decade later, we remain committed to that role and fully embrace a strengthened mission to advance progress on a truly Great Park for the entire county.
Special thanks to OCGP Deputy CEO, Cliff Wallace, for providing the beautiful photos of the carousel animals.
